Boat Winterization in Vancouver, British Columbia

Boat winterization ensures that your boat is properly protected during the winter months by adding the proper amount of antifreeze to your engine cooling system and changing the oil and filter.

It also includes fogging the engine to help protect it from rust and corrosion, as well as cleaning and lubricating the parts of the engine that need it.

Proper winterization will help your boat’s engine last longer and perform better. That’s why it’s recommended for all boats stored in Canada during the winter months.

Why Is Boat Winterization Necessary?

Winterizing your boat protects it from cold weather and extended inactivity—often called “long-term storage” in milder regions. Without it, moisture can lead to rust, clogged passages, engine overheating, and fuel issues.

Seal failure and gear case damage are also risks. Proper winterization prevents costly spring repairs.

Boat Winterization FAQs

When outboard engines are stored, they must be drained of all water to prevent condensation. Covering or enclosing the engine also helps with ventilation.

  • Protect the engine’s internals from corrosion during storage.
  • Modern outboard engines are typically “fogged” through a simple process.
  • Some engines offer a protection layer that can be mixed into fuel, activated through the outboard’s control system.
  • Each manufacturer has its own procedure, so consult your owner’s manual.

A final tip: change your lower unit and powerhead oil and inspect for water intrusion. Store your boat with fresh fluids.

Stern drives are more complex because water must be removed from both the block and the drive unit. Antifreeze may need to circulate through the system for adequate protection. Consult your owner’s manual for specific steps.

  • Remove block plugs to drain the engine and eliminate sediment.
  • Inspect exposed parts like hoses and clamps.
  • Bring the engine to operating temperature before fogging to remove moisture.
  • Change oil for engine longevity.

Inboard treatments are similar to stern drives but without a drive system. They typically involve opening petcocks and removing plugs to drain the system, then introducing antifreeze.

  • If your boat remains in the water during winter, close the intake seacock and follow proper procedures to circulate antifreeze.
  • Ensure the engine reaches operating temperature before running antifreeze through.
  • Perform a visual inspection, fogging, and oil change before winter.

All gas-powered engines require individualized care.

  • Add a quality fuel-stabilizing additive.
  • Ethanol-blended fuel can become unstable during storage, leading to problems in spring.
  • After adding the additive, run the engine to distribute it through the system.
  • Change all engine filters and separators—always replace the canister rather than reusing it.

Plumbing systems are the next things most boat owners will need to consider.

  • Any freshwater system must be completely drained before adding non-toxic antifreeze.
  • Open all faucets and run them until the tank is dry.
  • Add antifreeze to the system, then open the farthest faucet until antifreeze appears.
  • If you have a water heater, ensure both hot and cold faucets draw antifreeze, or bypass and drain separately.
  • Pump out holding tanks and ensure antifreeze flows through them.

There are a few important notes you should know about winterizing your boat. The hull and deck of the vessel can make or break its performance, so be sure to protect them with some preventive measures this season:

  • Clean both the hull and deck thoroughly, scrubbing away dirt or growth.
  • Identify cracks or other damage and make necessary repairs.
  • Apply a fresh coat of wax to protect exterior surfaces.
  • If storing on a trailer, ensure wheels are properly tightened and free of cracks.
  • Check lights and tires to ensure they are in good working order.
